This 2 DVD set is comprised of the Instructional DVD and the Practice DVD.
The Instructional DVD simulates the experience of learning the Primary Series of Ashtanga yoga through “Mysore Style” — the teaching method employed by Sri K. Pattabhi Jois in India, how he taught it to Melanie and how Ashtanga yoga is traditionally handed down.
It gives you 28 sessions that progressively take you through the Primary series. – Posture modifications and instruction on how to approach a pose to move from one level to the next are offered on this DVD. Throughout you will find many helpful hints on form and technique.
The DVD introduces the fundamental and internal aspects of the practice: breath (ujjayi), movement (vinyasa), energy locks (bandha), and gaze (dristi).
The animated introduction includes beautiful footage of Mysore, India as well as a Mysore style class in Melanie’s New Orleans studio.
The Practice DVD simulates a LED Ashtanga class which ideally is meant to support your main Mysore Style practice. With Melanie, you move straight through the Primary Series to her count. It’s a refresher of the correct vinyasa, the correlation of a specific breath to a specific movement such as moving into or out of a pose, the correct focal points, reminders to engage energy locks and most importantly to BREATHE!
All together this complete set is 4 1/2 hours of dynamic instruction and practice. The back cover features a picture of Melanie with her beloved teacher, Sri K. Pattabhi Jois and a heartfelt recommendation from actor Willem Dafoe who Melanie taught when she lived in New York and started on his path of Ashtanga yoga.
